Theodore’s dragon: a journey with Epilepsy was born out of a mother’s love and desire to create a story to help demystify and destigmatise Epilepsy.
When my son experienced his first seizure in the summer of 2022, our world was abruptly altered - never to look the same again. Subsequent episodes and medical examinations led to the diagnosis of both Tonic-Clonic and Absence Seizure epilepsy.
These seizures have occurred in various settings, ranging from shops to school, and as a result, my son has become increasingly aware of both the occurrence of his seizures and the reactions of those around him. Witnessing seizures can be a frightening and perplexing experience for children, yet they exhibit remarkable acceptance when provided with clear and reasoned explanations.
Determined to combat the stigma surrounding epilepsy, I embarked on the journey of creating a children's book that delves into life with this condition. This endeavor aims to foster understanding, compassion, and awareness among young readers.
Furthermore, the back of the book contains essential information about epilepsy tailored for adults who may read the storybook with children. This informational section is designed to equip caregivers with the knowledge to address any questions that may arise from young readers, fostering a supportive and informed environment.
